I’ve been trying to come up with a good way to store the vinyl I use with my Silhouette Cameo for a while now. I had it in drawers but it was a pain and often got wrinkled. I saw some cool stands made with PVC on Pinterest — but on Saturday I saw some Headband holders at Rhea Lanas Consignment event and I thought — HEY…..
So I took some scrap fabric and scrap ribbon and made 2 headband holders. I then hooked them on some cut dowel rods I hung on a clippy hanger. THEN I cut more dowels to 14.5″ and hung them across the 2 headband holders with the vinyl in between. I hung the hanger on the wall behind a door. It’s AWESOME!!!!
All with stuff I had on hand except some 65 cent dowel rods!!
This is awesome!! I have been trying to figure out an inexpensive way to store my vinyl rolls that doesn’t take up a lot of space!!! I found you on Pinterest!! Could you explain a little more what the headband things are? I guess I could just use elastic strips, but I’m curious about the headbands! 🙂
I just used 1″ ribbon for each of the long strips and then sewed 1/4″ ribbon at even intervals on each strip. I hung them from a hanger with clips, put the vinyl on dowel rods that I cut down to size — and I slip them in the 1/4″ ribbon slots on each side. It works GREAT. You could use fabric strips too — I just had all this ribbon lying around. All I had to buy was 6 dowel rods that I cut to size. Easy and CHEAP!! Hangs on the wall behind a door!
Send me a pic if you make one!
What an awesome creation!! I will definitely give this a try. It would also be good for spools of ribbon…and behind a door??…what a space saver! Thanks for sharing!
Love this idea. Vertical storage is always so much more efficient. Making mine as I type…. thanks for the great idea!
I’m glad you find it useful. I have mine hanging behind a door in otherwise wasted space.
Mine came out great! It is so nice to be able to see all the colours of vinyl, which I couldn’t when I had them in a old divided wine glass box in the closet, it was too dark. Freed up closet space, which I have now filled with 3 drawer 8 1/2 x 11″ plastic organizers, one drawer for each colour for all my scraps. This was a perfect solution to my organizing needs. So thank you so much again for sharing it 🙂
My vinyl is 24″ wide so would I be able to make it wide enough for the vinyl? Really love this idea since my wife and I live in a 1 bedroom apartment.
Yes – -you just might need to fasten something different to the top to hang it from – but you could easily add a strap for that. Also make sure your dowel rods are thick enough so they don’t bend. The ribbons are strong – that’s not the worry
Great idea!! Thanks for sharing!!
Can you give me an idea of what the intervals between the Vinyl is? It looks to be about 3″, is that correct. I want to get as many rolls hung as I can, but don’t want the weight to brake it. Love the idea, and want to make one for my craft room as well. Love the behind the door idea. Thanks.
It’s about 3.5 inches. You do have to worry about weight. I’ve found that the dowels bow a bit — I would probably hang the strips directly from a heavy plastic hanger if I had to do it again instead of a pants hanger with clips.
It’s 3 inches
I have got to try this, sounds easy. I like that you can see all your colors of vinyl. Thanks for sharing.
Ok i get the ribbon part n such but what is it you stapled ribbon too? Is that 2 pieces of wood strips? Thank you for sharing
You slip the dowel rods through the loops you make
I am so not a sewer…. Do you think fabric glue or stitch witchery would work?
I’m not sure — depending on your vinyl rolls it might be too heavy,
Great idea! Very clever Thank you for posting it
You should make a diy video! This looks awesome but I’m not sure I understand how it’s done! I’m new to the whole diy scene!
What did you use to cut the dowel rods? This is a wonderful idea?
The dowel rods are thin so I just used large cutting shears
you are a very clever lady, that is awesome
Love the idea but I’m not an avid sewer so I modified your idea and absolutely love it!!!
Would send you pics if you would like.
