here is a pattern I use as the base of all my hats

for the newborn owl eyes and beak I use F hook
for the outer part of the eye which is the biggest circle
ch. 3 work 6 HDC in 2nd ch from hook join (6 st)
round 1: ch 2, 2 HDC in each st around join (12 st)
round 2: ch 2, HDC in same st 2 HDC in next st repeat around join. (18 st)
round 3: ch 2 HDC in 1st 2 st, 2 HDC in the next st repeat around join. (24 st)
Round 4: ch 2 HDC in 1st 3 st, 2 HDC in next st repeat around join. (35 st)
finish off leave long tail for sewing onto hat repeat for 2nd eye
Middle size eye:
Ch 3 do 6 HDC in 2nd ch from hook join (6 st)
round 1: ch. 2, 2 HDC in each st around join (12 st.)
finish off and leave long tail for sewing to hat. repeat these steps for 2nd eye
Smallest part of eye in black
ch. 3 work 6 HDC in 2nd st from the hook (6 st)
join leave long tail for sewing on hat
Beak: orange
ch. 5
row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook across (4 st.)
row 2: ch 1, skip 1st st. sc across (3 st)
row 3: ch 1, skip 1st st sc across (2 st)
row 4: ch 1, skip 1st st sc across (1 st)
ch. 1 sc in last st and around the entire triangle to give a clean look join leave long tail for sewing onto the hat
for the ears just mix the colors together you chose for the hat 4 or 5 strands fold in half and pull through a st on the top part of hat using over hand knot.
